Legend.

The sun has many names, for example: Surya, which means - belonging to the dynasty of the demigods. Since Surya is one of the twelve Adityas - children of the progenitor Kashyapa and Aditi. Heli - means "playful", from this word originates the Greek name of the Sun "Helios". Bhanuman and Vivasvat means "shining," Dipta Rashmi - with flaming rays, Mritanda - born from a dead egg. What a strange name for the sun, right?

Legend has it that when Aditi, the mother of Surya, was pregnant and resting, reclining at home, Chandra entered the house. Being in a position, the expectant mother could not get up in time to greet the guest. Because of this, Chandra (i.e. the Moon) cursed her, saying that she would give birth to a dead child. In desperation, the woman came to her husband Kashyap, but he turned out to be powerless to cancel the curse. He was able to do this only partially - so, although Surya was born dead, he continued to live after that.

When the Sun grew up, he was married to Sanjni (which means “mutual understanding”) - the beautiful daughter of Visvakarma - the heavenly architect. Soon they had three children: Vaivasvat (the son of Vivastvat) - who became the ancestor (manna) and two twins: Yama (the god of death) and Yami.

However, their happy family life did not last long due to the unbearable heat of Surya, which caused discomfort to poor Sanjni. In the end, she could not stand it and, creating her copy - Chkhay (shadow), left her husband’s house. Her father, Visvakarman, to whose house she came, advised her daughter to show prudence and return to her husband. But Sanjni was determined and, turning into a mare, began to live on earth. She ate one dry grass, hoping that in this way she could accustom herself to the unbearable heat.

Meanwhile, Surya, being too keen on fulfilling his duty (his work), did not notice the substitution. So he and Chhaia (shadow) had three more children: Shani (planet Saturn), ancestor of Savarni and the goddess River Tapati. Since Chhaya loved her children more than the children of Sanjni, she quarreled with Yama and cursed him, saying that his leg would fall off the body.

According to another version, she cursed Shani (Saturn), although he was her son, and from this he became lame. This was explained by the ancients that he is the slowest planet among all the others. In addition, this legend also shows the nature of Shani - he is the son of the Sun and Shadow, and here you can see his cruel nature - he kicked his own mother. However, Saturn and Pit (the god of death) have much in common. In fact, this is one and the same energy, only Saturn takes care of working out bad karma alive, and Yama - about the same, only for the dead.

Frightened by the words of his mother, Yama ran to his father and asked him to save him. To which Surya replied: “I can only loosen the curse, so that the worms will eat only a little flesh of the feet and after that they will fall to the ground. Thus, the curse will come true, but it will not bring too much harm. ” Pleased with this, Yama left, and Surya thought: "How could a mother curse her own child?"

In the end, he called his wife to his place and began to question her. Although Chhaya did not want to tell the truth, she, frightened by the anger of Surya, told everything. The enraged Sun hastened to his wife's father, Visvakarman, and was ready to curse him. But the wise old man stopped him, telling the radiant how hard his daughter had to do because of the heat. "What to do?" in perplexity broke out in-law.

As we already know, Visvakarman was a celestial architect, translated his name means "creator of all things." So he found a way to help the radiant son-in-law: he tied Surya to the mill, which ground part of the heat. From which, the craftsman Vishvakarman made a disk to Sudarshan for Vishnu - the keeper of everything. For the destroyer of Shiva, he made a trident, for the god of wealth Kubera - a chariot, and for the leader of the army of the gods Kartikeya - a spear.

Having got rid of excess heat, the Sun hastened in search of his wife and, seeing her in the form of a mare, he himself turned into a horse. Not recognizing him, Sanjnya rushed away, but Surya still caught up with her lover and the family spouted into her mouth. The woman was frightened that she had cheated on her husband and released the family through the nostrils - from this two twins appeared. Named by the Ashvins (translated as “centaurs”), they became the best healers of the gods.

In addition, Surya had another son from the earthly woman Kunti, named Karna. He was born in a golden shell and with gold earrings in his ears, which were the perfect defense against any weapon. The valor and generosity of Karna was sung in Mahabharata, however, his nobility cost him dearly.

Arjuna's father, Indra, was frightened when he learned that Karna had vowed to destroy his son. Having also found out about Karna’s vow to give everything, whatever he was asked for, the king of the gods Indra came to the son of the Sun with a request to give him a shell and earrings. Without thinking for a second, Karna tore off the golden armor from the body, from which his body turned into a continuous bleeding wound. Nobleness, honesty, generosity and courage are the main solar qualities. So Surya was no less generous than his son.

Thanks to him, Nachiketas and Markandeya received immortality. Another hero of Mahabharata - Yudhishthira, Surya presented to Akshayapatra - a non-depleting pot that gives its owner everything that he would not wish.

The monkey god Hanuman, wishing to study the Vedas, came to Brihaspati, but he refused to teach him, since it is impossible to teach a constantly jumping monkey. This legend teaches that in order to receive wisdom, immobility of the mind is necessary. But the mind - like a monkey rushing from thought to thought, not stopping, not for a second. Try not to think about anything, and you will see for yourself.

However, the mind never calms down and Hanuman went for wisdom to Surya. “But how will I teach you if I myself am constantly on the move?” radiant shrugged. "Nothing, I will constantly run after you," the monkey god promised, and thus he received knowledge of the Vedas. This legend also contains a deep philosophical meaning.

Being the very personification of responsibility and service, the Sun is constantly moving across the horizon, generously giving out light and warmth to all the inhabitants of the earth. Hanuman, being Rama's best servant - is a symbol of devotion, and being a monkey - also personifies the mind. All this perfectly illustrates the main idea of the Bhagavad-gita: if you cannot calm the mind, then direct it to the service of others. But in fact - to serve God. This is what Hanuman (the mind) did constantly moving after Surya (or the solar avatar - Rama, as is written in the Ramayana). An indicator of the true Self in the horoscope is precisely Surya (if it is well located, if not, then it indicates egoism). Thus, this legend illustrates the devotion of the mind to the higher Self and the benefit received by it is the higher wisdom.

Some of the Vedas from the Sun were also received by people, namely, the White Yajurveda.
